Work and Fun

I get to be a faculty advisor for our student association. I love that part of my job. I get to rub shoulders with and mentor some pretty incredible students. This past week we shared Valentines at our board meeting. I found scratch and sniff cards that smelled like tacos, pizza, donuts, and chocolate chip cookies. I thought it was appropriate from the cooking teacher. I plan to give them to my class on Tuesday.

My TA Michaela and I recently presented at our UACTE conference. She and I demonstrated recipes you can make in a 50-minute lab using the Instant Pot. We made macaroni and cheese and applesauce for them to try. We also talked a bit about how to convert a conventional recipe to Instant Pot. A lot of former students were there, so I asked them all to stick around for a photo. I don't look forward to conferences, but it's always fun to see friends in my field. I saw former students, former classmates, former roommates, etc. The presentation went really well, in spite of me forgetting the lid to my Instant Pot. We made it work and demonstrated one recipe at a time instead of both at the same time. Oops.

All of these folks are current or former students

I got to see 2 former roommates this week. Kathy Thompson Gray was in town. She came Tuesday night. I'm glad I had made baked potato soup on Monday. We had soup quickly before going to the church for a Relief Society activity. I'm on the activity committee. The activity was a get-to-know you night and we had a great time. Not great attendance, but those that came had a great time. That's all that matters. We'll gradually get more. Kathy spent the night at my house and headed to her daughter's house on Wednesday. We had a fun visit, catching up on each other's lives. Then Syd Hoopes Ash reached out. She came to campus on Friday. We got to visit for about 30 minutes in my office before I had to get to a meeting. Kathy lives in Arizona and Syd lives in Kansas. Both are lovely women. It's nice to connect.

Life is good.

Rose Hunter has a birthday coming up. I told Allie that she was going shopping with her mom to get makeup for her 12th birthday. Allie said her cousins Sarah and Allison told her to get mascara first. Allie said she needed to give Rose the same advice. We quickly had a video chat with Sarah and Allison to laugh about it and to discuss what Rose should get. Allison and I said blush and mascara. Allie and Sarah entertained the thought of mascara and eyebrows. Allison and I were adamant that eyebrows are a NO for a 12-year old. We laughed and laughed.

Allie Adcock, Sarah Christesen, Allison DeVuyst, and me

Kristen and Doug were in town. Mel and I went to Allison and James' house last night for pizza and movie night with Kristen, Doug, James, Allison, Audrey, and Mac. We had a great time. Mel and I had worked in the morning, cleaning my basement to prepare for finishing it. That is coming as soon as I get the approval from the city. Can't wait!

Cruising with Sisters

My sisters and I planned a trip for late January. We went on a quick cruise out of Los Angeles. Kristen, Karen, Debbie, and I were the only ones available for the trip. Jenny and Scott continue to serve in Africa and Kelly is finishing her PhD at Oxford in England.

Kris, Debbie, and Karen flew into Long Beach by mid-day on Thursday. I had to arrive late Thursday. I found a flight that left after work. I didn't get to use my new flight benefits. I wouldn't have gotten on, because it was a full flight. I took a taxi to the airport. Karen's friend works for Marriott, so we got a screaming deal on a hotel room. We went to bed after talking a bit and got up to enjoy a nice breakfast before getting an Uber to the port.

In the hotel lobby

At our yummy breakfast

I did nothing to plan this trip. I just showed up with what Karen told me to bring. Life had been too busy for me to think about details. As it was, I worked until 6:00 pm the day I left to wrap things up before heading to the airport. I also dived right back into work on Monday, once I got reception. I don't really get a break from work. I can't imagine what Natalie's work/life balance looks like.

Our Uber driver was a super nice guy who is Christian. We had nice talks about life. He had some insightful thoughts on the pandemic. He says he thinks God didn't like how we were treating each other, so he sent all of humanity to their rooms to think about their behavior. When we thought we were ready to get out, God would send another strain, sending us to our rooms to think again. Not a bad point. Can you believe we went to the wrong port? He drove us there and said "you're on Princess, right?" We weren't. Karen double checked and we were supposed to be an a different port. It was only an additional 15 minutes to get to the right port. We got through security in time to hear Cindy Lauper's "Girls Just Want to Have Fun" playing on the ship.

Karen, me, Debbie, and Kristen ready to board ship

We were on the 8th floor, just a couple of rooms apart

Non-sleepers

Sleepers

We checked out bags and took our backpacks onto the ship. It's huge. Karen had been on a lot of cruises. Debbie had been before. Kristen and I had never been on a big cruise. It's crazy. It's also very unsettling to be waited on all day by people who don't get to leave the ship. The employees were mostly Filipino, Indian, and Indonesian. They don't leave the ship and they have tiny living quarters. In fact, our server, Mary, said that she and her husband are fortunate to share a room with bunk beds.

Anyway, we were on the ship from 11:00 on Friday morning to 8:00 am Monday morning. We got some pizza and fruit when we got on the ship. We found a table in the library and played games. Debbie and I got our soda cards and enjoyed some drinks. We were able to get to our rooms around 3:00 pm. Karen and I shared a room because we like to take naps and sleep in. Kristen and Debbie shared a room because they don't sleep in and they don't nap. We were in an inside cabin and I loved how dark it got when Karen and I turned off the lights for a little nap before dinner.

We were in the 5:30 dinner group. We could select any appetizer we wanted, any main dish, and any dessert. We could even ask for more than 1 of anything. Our server, Mary, took great care of us. Karen taught us a new card game called Swoop. We played games, ate food, and talked (Karen and I napped) for 3 days.

Saturday was a port day at Ensenada, Mexico. We went off the boat around 11:00 and were back on the boat and in the hot tub within 5 hours. We went to the Cathedral in town. It was beautiful. We only got to spend about 15 minutes inside before a woman told us they were closing. Good thing I speak Spanish because she definitely didn't speak English. We then walked to a fish taco stand Karen had heard about. Right across the street was a woman selling tamales. I got a chicken and green salsa tamale because I knew I'd be mad if I didn't get one. It was delicious. Sooooo good. The fish taco was good too. I ordered all in Spanish.

First time I've been to Mexico. It was fun to use my Spanish

Saturday night we watched the ice skating show on the ship. Sunday was a quiet day at sea. I didn't get seasick at all. I did take motion sick pills each day, just to be safe. There were a few times that we felt the ship, but not enough to get sick. We took turns sharing spiritual thoughts. It's nice to spend time with them. Jenny and Kelly were missed. It was weird, but nice, to have no reception while on the ship. No emails, no texts, etc.

Karen and I went to top deck to get reception and answer some texts and emails

Found a nice big table for breakfast and to play games

Before the fancy dinner

Karen ordered multiples and loved it all

We came home at night to towel friends, monkey, crab.

Karen gave us each this print. I bought a frame and put it in my office

Monday we got off the ship and took a cab to the airport. We all left within a couple of hours of each other. By the time I got home, it was about 5:00 pm. I had to dive right into work. Emails, course announcements, phone calls, etc. I also had to go grocery shopping. Life as a single person isn't so glamorous. Lots to do and nobody to run errands for me. Oh well.

Ready for Winter Semester 2023

Kamiko texted me earlier this week, asking if I"d like a blessing for the new semester. I went this afternoon for that blessing. He gave both me and Bekki blessings, then we had pizza. Here are a few things I remember from my blessing:

  1. Don't let one difficult student bother me. Remember the dozens of the silent majority, for which I am making a difference. The one student doesn't matter.
  2. The women with whom I work look to me for leadership. I can do it.
  3. It may not feel like I'm making a difference in my students' lives, but I am.
  4. It might be a difficult semester, but I will do it.
  5. I have learned much from the past 2 difficult years of teaching. Keep learning.

He blessed Bekki with the knowledge that her students know her pedigree and to remember that she is a strong woman. It was a great evening with the kids. We also played Yahtzee. Then I went to Starlyn's to watch the latest Hallmark movie. I love the Hjorths. They are great friends/family.

I've been wondering about my social life and if I need to work harder on that, but nothing came up in my blessing, so I'm going to keep focusing on work and know that the Lord has a plan for me in all aspects of my life.

Look at that table! Adrienne and Bella. All the 80's bright colors, candy, chips, goodie bags, etc. The kids are in for a treat!

Look at those cute kiddos, ready for a fun party

Earlier this week, I found myself at Adrienne Murray's house, helping out. She was my student over 14 years ago, when she was pregnant with Bella, who just turned 14. Her husband just had knee surgery and she's pretty overwhelmed with life as a mom of 5 busy kids. I went to wash dishes and help out. She mentioned that Bella's party was last night and that she was ordering pizza from Costco, which would have required her to drive 15 minutes to Orem or Spanish Fork. I remembered I was going to a wedding reception in Alpine last night, so I picked up the pizza and dropped it off on my way to Alpine. I was happy to help. I also got to help her with last minute touches. I got Patrick, her husband, some pizza and a drink before I left. I also got to help get drinks for all the kiddos. Adrienne had really worked hard to set up the table for 20 teenagers to enjoy their 80's themed murder mystery party.

Kathy Gray, freshman roommate, and me

I taught both of these kids of Kathy. Her daughter now lives on a mini farm and has 2 kids. Her son is a pilot for executives. So fun to catch up.

Then I headed to Alpine. My roommate Kathy Gray was in town for her daughter's wedding reception. I had taught 2 of Kathy's kids. It was fun to see her and to see her kids. I had a nice visit with her. She and her husband live in Arizona.

We start the new semester tomorrow. I'm ready. I've worked really hard to organize all of our foods classes and to train our new and newish faculty. We've worked really hard on our syllabus and on knowing how to help our students. I'm encouraged. Here we go.

Prayers Answered

I've made some interesting connections this week that have led me to some answered prayers.

Lynn and Michael were so excited for me to get home from work to see this little guy that they made for me. We named him Calvin because we decided he looked like he belonged in a Calvin and Hobbes book.

First of all, Annie Oswald put out a request for household items for a Mongolian couple that just moved to American Fork. Coincidentally, someone posted in our neighborhood Facebook page that they were emptying their parent's home and had household items. I went over and got dishes, a toaster, a blender, and a crock pot. It was great. The woman giving the items away is named Leslie Jones. She is single and lives in my stake. She was a delight to talk to. We visited for probably an hour about jobs, being single and loving it, etc. I look forward to seeing her around the neighborhood. She taught for a few years, but now does real estate. She encouraged me to finish my basement. It got me thinking...really thinking.

Answer to a prayer.

I really want to have that space finished. I could spend 3 more years saving or I could take the leap and get a loan and do it. I really think I might invest in my home and in myself by doing it. I was thinking of hiring a contractor, meaning the project would cost me about $35,000. Then I thought I might be my own contractor and just find my own subcontractors. After all, I'm not in a hurry. Garret Hjorth is a plumber, Jamie's husband, Bob, is an electrician. I know builders and others who could refer me to a framer, drywall guy, etc. I can paint.

The crazy thing is that I talked to mom about it. I also talked to Derek about it. They thought it was a good idea. I can still do the project, but do some work on my own, saving me thousands of dollars. I had an impression to ask my neighbor Michael Maughan what he thought about the idea. He was so encouraging. He also said if I got a copy of my floor plan to him, he'd draft up the plan for the city. He'd help me plan everything - the electrical, plumbing, etc. He said his software will even estimate the cost.

Answer to a prayer.

I've been dealing with mice. It's not a huge problem, but ONE mouse is too many for my liking. I pay Greenix to come and set and remove traps. I just can't do it. Before Sunday School started today, I found myself sitting in front of 3 people who were talking about smoking meat and the conversation turned to a mouse getting into one man's smoker. I told him I hope he burned it. We got talking about living by the field and having mice in our basements. The guy, Nate Baker, told me he used to work in pest control and he found the entry point for the critters and sealed up his home. I was so excited to have a new idea on how to get rid of these unwanted guests. I've literally been praying about it. Just Saturday, I asked Lynn to also pray about it. She and Michael are having similar issues. It appears that the builder failed to properly close the space around the hole where the air conditioning unit goes into the house, leaving some space for mice to get in. BINGO. During Sunday school, I decided to ask Nate if he could come check my place. I'd pay him in money or pie or other food. Before I got the chance to ask, he offered to come take a look. He's getting supplies and coming on Wednesday.

Answer to a prayer!!!!

I'm so grateful!

December!

It was a good month.

I started by letting go of control and going to Las Vegas for a national conference for ACTE (an organization for career and technical educators). I missed the last day in class with 110 and left Starlyn and my TAs to also cover 215 lab. I've never missed class for a trip like this. I wasn't really looking forward to it, but it was a growing experience for me.  I rode down with Natalie. We got there Tuesday night. I had her drop me off at my hotel, The Strat, which was a mile away from the conference venue. Natalie signed up early enough to get a room at the conference venue hotel. I'll do that next time. I was so stressed in September that I couldn't commit to the conference. I didn't decide until November to go. There was a Walgreen's down the street from where I stayed and I grabbed food there if Natalie and I didn't have plans to go out to eat. I walked to and from my hotel to the conference venue each day. I was too cheap to get an Uber, plus I wanted to walk since I'd be stuck sitting all day in classes.

This cute group of 14 students make up my SFL 215 class, Advanced Food Preparation

This young man, Jacob Toone, roommate to our TA, Thomas, made 215 so fun. He really engaged with all his classmates and kept us entertained and thinking. A great kid.

Natalie thought she had some meetings on Wednesday, but she didn't, so we spent the day walking along the strip. We grabbed a burger at Gordon Ramsay's restaurant. Maria Trump had told me it was good and Natalie has always wanted to eat at a Gordon Ramsay place, so it was a logical choice. Because the conference was in Vegas, a lot of Utah FCS teachers were there. It was fun to connect with everyone. I attended some classes and met some people. I have to be honest that the Utah CTE conference is better. The Utah affiliate really does a great job. I'll go again next year, though. It's important to get involved and to meet other educators, especially to meet people outside of Utah. I met a really nice lady from Arkansas. I told her I'll keep her informed about the temple open house in Bentonville so she can go inside. She knows members of the church and has a family member that is a convert. I was gone Tuesday night - Saturday night.

My new friend, an FCS teacher from Arkansas

We kept interviewing candidates for study abroad in every spare minute we had. We have to narrow it down to 22 students. We will interview 57 students. Some who really stood out at the beginning won't even make the cut because there are so many great students who applied. At least there are some freshman who can wait and apply in 2 years. Melia applied and will go with us.

We also interviewed for an adjunct faculty member to teach SFL 340, Family Meal Management. We hired my old roommate Pam Rock. She'll be great. I had lunch with her on the 19th and got her trained. We have a zoom meeting this week, where we'll cover more items. We also interviewed for a CFA position. This is when a nearby school district gives us a seasoned teacher on loan. BYU pays the district their salary and the teacher keeps all benefits with the district. We narrowed it down to 2 exceptional people. Natalie will make the offer and we'll see who accepts.

Before the semester ended, I helped teach our methods students about their giant assessment they have to complete in the winter. I also went with Natalie to take Christmas presents to Carol Ellsworth, one of my professors. I go with her when she has to take stuff to Ruth Brasher, too. I also had a great lab with 215. I have loved that class more and more each semester. The students are a lot of fun. They sent me pictures of them in lab when I was gone in Vegas just to let me know that they were doing well.

We had our annual Book Gang Christmas Breakfast with gift exchange on Saturday, December 10. We had a great turnout and really had a nice time. I had missed a few recent meetings due to work. It was good to see everyone. I took a rechargeable candle lighter, which I have and LOVE. Kim Blight ended up with it. I got frozen cookie dough from Rosemary, which really came in handy when I had to take cookies to a funeral.

Table set for Santa Lucia

My advent calendar has some new additions - a mini Stonehenge (#5), a mini coffee pot from Dubai from Annie (#8). I also have a mini Eiffel Tower. I want to fill it with trinkets from travels.

Book Gang

Kamiko and Mel came over on Sunday, December 11, to celebrate Santa Lucia with breakfast for dinner. We had scrambled eggs, hash browns, bacon, sausage, oranges, and pastries. Of course, Bekki was invited, but she wasn't feeling well, so she stayed home. We sent a plate home with Kamiko. The kids stayed and we watched "White Christmas." Kamiko couldn't get over Bing Crosby's blue eyes. He also said he's going to dress as Danny Kay in his choreography number for Halloween. LOL. After "White Christmas" we watched "Arthur's Perfect Christmas" from PBS. Kamiko always loved Arthur and we have a tradition of watching that. Then we watched "The Toy who Saved Christmas" which is a veggie tales movie. That one stunk, but Mel has fond memories of watching it as a kid. We laughed. It was a fun afternoon/evening.

Mel talked me into buying a Christmas quilt she found on Facebook Marketplace. It cost $20. We made stockings out of it. We ended up with 7 stockings. I sent one to Allie with candy in it since she won't be home for Christmas due to her new job. Mel meticulously made the perfect pattern and they turned out great. They are identical on one side, but different on the other, so we have options.

So proud of Allie. She is now a flight attendant for Republic. This is a picture of her training class. They worked so hard to earn their wings.

Annie Oswald and I on one of our many mall walks. We bought children's books and art supplies.

My friend Adrienne gave me this print. It's a depiction of our Heavenly Father, the creator. I love it. She specifically picked it out for me. It's going in my office.

Starlyn lucked out with tickets to the Tabernacle Choir Christmas Concert and shared with me. We left her house at 4:00 pm on Friday, December 16, got to Salt Lake around 5:00, got dinner and hung out until it was time to go to the conference center. It was a beautiful concert. The guest artist is Filipina and she sang a Filipino Christmas song. I wished the kids had been there. She sang it again for Music and the Spoken Word and I recorded it for the kids. I've shown Kamiko and Mel. I'll show Allie next time she's in town. We know very little about Filipino culture and heritage. It makes sense since Keenan's birth father was abusive and left their lives when Keenan was only 2 years old. It does leave a gaping hole for my kiddos.

I spent time here and there working on projects that I need to finish before January 9, when we go back to school. Both Online and Blended versions of SFL 110 with the new textbook, new lectures, new quizzes and exams are ready to go. SFL 340, with more complex quiz questions, is ready to go. I moved SFL 215 to Canvas as my learning management system. I also worked on the article I have been asked to write for the alumni magazine. I also took some days OFF and didn't think about work at all. I need to recharge.

Mel came to my place the Monday before Christmas, thinking she had Covid, so she stayed in her room. She tested and did have it. That's 2 Christmas breaks in a row for Melia and Covid. She stayed put, I took her food. She was done with isolation on Friday and we went to the movie and saw "Puss in Boots" with Kamiko and Bekki. I think I was the only parent in the theater with children over the age of 10. We had a blast. It was a cute movie. We wanted to see "Avatar" but Mel didn't think she could sit through a 3+ hour movie without coughing a lot. After the movie, Mel went to dinner with her dad and I stuck around with Kamiko and Bekki. We got dinner at Cafe Rio and hung out. It was fun. On Saturday, I went walking with Annie Oswald in the warmth and protection of the mall. Then I made cinnamon rolls. I took some to the Brau's house for all of them. Mel and I got Chinese takeout, then we worked on the stockings. We joked that we made them for us and our future spouses. We made 7. There's an extra in case Allie is every polyamorous. Hehehe. Just kidding.

Mel and I got decked out for Christmas church

Lovely breakfast after church

Christmas smiles

We went to my ward on Sunday morning. Kamiko and Bekki came over on Sunday afternoon. Sunday night, Mel left and went to visit my mom and dad, then went to Kobi's house, then to Keenan's. I fixed a feast on Monday for the kids. We had turkey and all the trimmings. It was fun. Mel really spoiled me on Christmas. She got me all of my favorites - Diet Dr. Pepper, caramel M&M's, Swedish Fish, Scooby Doo cookies, Mentos, and bath salts. It was really sweet of her. I gave each of the kids money. We weren't going to exchange gifts because of the trip to Florida in the summer, but I still did a little something. The holidays are so fun.

Some people call the week between Christmas and the New Year "The Bermuda Triangle" because time just gets lost. It's been a relaxing week for me with writing the article, reading a book, listening to a self help book that I loved. It's called "You Are a Badass." I've been mulling around finishing my basement and have been troubleshooting the mice in my basement. There are fewer and fewer, so I think we're getting there. I've gone walking most days, even in light snow. It's been very relaxing. My house is so quiet, but I don't mind. I've watched a lot of Hallmark movies.

I was going to play games with Starlyn and Lee on New Year's Eve, but she ended up with Covid, so I was home, in my pajamas, finishing my 2022 photo book. I make one each year and now I wonder why I do it. Does anyone really care about my life? I don't mean that in a macabre way. I'm just wondering why I spend hours making it...will anyone ever look at my books? Oh well, my books, along with this blog that nobody reads, are my way of journaling. My neighbor Lynn Maughan hates New Year's Eve as much as I do. When I was at the grocery store, I saw mini bottles of sparking juice. I bought one for me and one for her and Michael. I also had a piece of toast around 10:00. It was my "toast" to the new year. After 2020, I'm hesitant to get too excited about any new year. I am happy and healthy, but I don't get too hyped. I'm realistic.

That balloon art says 2023. It was on our last walk of 2022 in the mall. Me, Annie, Kim Blight, and Corinne.

Toasting in the New Year

I'm working on my cozy look and feel. Gonna light more candles in 2023.

Got to see my dear friend, Rhea Overson Whittaker from Texas days. She has since moved to North Carolina, then to Virginia. so nice to see her. She is a gem.
